Information about Driving

South Africans drive on the left side of the road. Over-taking is done in the right lane.

The road network is excellent in major urban areas including Stellenbosch. Rural areas have good roads but beware of smaller roads that can become dirt roads, be sure to have a map of the area you plan on visiting prior to setting off.

Speed limits in cities and towns are 60km/h with some areas allowing 70 to 80 km/h zones. Highways have a speed limit of 120 km/h. Respect speed limits as they are enforced with automatic speed cameras and ad-hoc mobile speed trapping.

In Stellenbosch, it is expected that cars will stop and allow pedestrians to cross the road at crosswalks.

When parking in public areas where car guards are present, it is customary to tip them an amount dependent on the time of day and amount of time spent parked under their supervision. R2-3 during and R5-10 in the evening is more than enough.
